Phil Madsen

Bio

New Zealand singer-songwriter Phil Madsen is the second youngest of a musical family of eight children. No stranger to the stage, Phil has been performing since the age of four. Recognized for his impressive vocal range, he has shared the stage with some of the biggest names in the business, including Air Supply, Cher, Hank Marvin, Hootie & the Blowfish, The Pointer Sisters, Spandau Ballet, and Boyzlife. He has also performed in Las Vegas for a private event with ‘America’s Got Talent’ finalists and recorded with musical producer Kevin Flournoy in Los Angeles.

Phil has two top 20 hits under his belt and won ‘Top Male Vocalist’ at the New Zealand Variety Artist Awards in 2013. He has self-produced two albums, ‘Mr Yellow Tree’ and 'This World'. His song ‘Dancing on the Moon' was awarded a top-five nomination in the APRA Silver Scroll Awards, and ‘This World' climbed to number one in the Singer-Songwriter Charts on iTunes.

In 2017, Phil joined Eddie Rayner’s show ‘ENZO’ in Australia and New Zealand, performing the songs of Split Enz—the original band before it reformed into ‘Crowded House’—alongside an 18-piece orchestra, receiving excellent reviews.

“Phil’s voice and range were excellent and, dare I say it, sounded better at times than the original artist.” – David Boyle, The 13th Floor

“Madsen's voice is incredible, not only for range but also intensity – Stuff and Nonsense, I Hope I Never, and Edible Flowers were heart-rending.” – Patrick Shepherd, Stuff

In 2018, Phil began his solo tour, ‘One Man, 5 Voices’, performing original songs and covering famous artists, including Queen, The Eagles, The Bee Gees, and Neil Diamond.

During the COVID-19 lockdowns, Phil adapted to the new circumstances by taking his performances online and streaming shows over social media. He reached audiences of over 500k, bringing people together in a different way during challenging times. In 2021, he was featured in the book "Silver Linings" for his ability to keep people connected and bring joy during difficult times.

Phil finished off 2020 as the headline artist for ‘An Eden Park Christmas’ and performed on radio and the online broadcast for ‘Coca Cola Christmas On The Breeze.’

In addition to performing at high-profile public events such as the America's Cup opening ceremony, winning and homecoming celebrations, Coca Cola Christmas in the Park, and Sky City Starlight Symphony, Phil is also a regular at private functions and charitable events. Furthermore, he creates and performs commercial jingles for both local and international corporations. Phil's schedule is always full, with a wide range of engagements that showcase his musical versatility.

He is also actively working on a new album and collaborating with other artists in the industry. One of his recent achievements includes writing and producing the theme song ‘Let Me’, sung by Caitlin Rose for the short film ‘The Machine’, directed by Isaac Bell. The film secured an award for Best Editing at the LA Shorts Film Festival in 2022.

Phil has also just released his new song 'And Say' for New Zealand Music Month and is currently working on a new album.

BOYZLIFE

Phil toured New Zealand as a guest artist for Boyzlife—a duo comprising Keith Duffy and Brian McFadden, originally members of '90s and '00s boybands Boyzone and Westlife, respectively. The incredibly funny and talented singers invited Phil to join them on stage for their encore songs.

LOS ANGELES

Phil had the opportunity to travel to Los Angeles and record with legendary keyboardist, producer, and songwriter Kevin Flournoy and producer Matt Brownlie. Kevin has been the former keyboardist for American Idol, The Pointer Sisters, Chaka Khan, Donny Osmond, and Dionne Warwick, to name a few. Phil and Kevin did an impromptu live recording of 'What a Fool Believes' in Kevin's home in California. Currently, Phil is working on some new material with Kevin.

SPANDAU BALLET TOUR

Phil was initially asked to be Nik Kershaw's musical director and assemble a Kiwi band to be his backing group. Unfortunately, when Nik pulled out of his tour, Phil had the incredible opportunity to take his place and join Spandau Ballet.

AIR SUPPLY

Phil performed with his band as a guest artist on the Air Supply tour, delivering captivating and memorable performances throughout the tour.

HANK MARVIN

Phil had the honor of performing solo as a guest artist for Hank Marvin, the renowned guitarist from Cliff Richard's band.

COCA COLA CHRISTMAS IN THE PARK

Phil was fortunate enough to perform at CCCP for over 10 shows. This opportunity provided a great platform for him to launch his music in New Zealand. The photo, taken by Darryn Galpin, captures Phil performing his hit song 'Dancing on the Moon.'

THE POINTER SISTERS

Phil performed with his band as a guest artist for The Pointer Sisters. This opportunity introduced him to the incredible legendary keyboard player Kevin Flournoy. Later, Phil joined Kevin in Los Angeles to perform and record.

CHER FAREWELL TOUR

One of the biggest moments in Phil's life was when he was asked to perform as Cher's guest artist during her tour in New Zealand. "Meeting Cher was incredible, and I'll never forget this tour," Phil recalls.
